    Once hydrocarbons have been discovered, surveying becomes more detailed in order to ascertain the volume of reserves and the ease of exploitation. CGG can deliver the necessary data to answer these questions. Careful planning and the right design of a survey enables reservoir-quality data to be acquired, with the correct illumination, sampling density and sufficient bandwidth to enable quantitative reservoir characterization studies to be performed. As an integrated geoscience company we involve our GeoConsulting Seismic Reservoir Characterization experts and Subsurface Imaging teams in the survey planning from the beginning to ensure excellent quality data to characterize the reservoir fully.

    Tailored solutions for full or wide azimuths for improved illumination

    CGG can develop bespoke survey acquisition geometries to address the specific reservoir challenge. For example, StagSeis  ultra-long-offset, full-azimuth broadband data  was developed to improve illumination and enable imaging beneath the salt structures of the Gulf of Mexico. Offshore West Africa B-WATS (broadband wide-azimuth towed-streamer) was developed to mage beneath differently-shaped salt structures in shallower water, where near offsets are more important for multiple modeling. We perform detailed ray-tracing to work out the best way to illuminate the target so that the best possible image is achieved.

    Volumetric analysis

    Better volumetric analysis and economic evaluations can be made from BroadSeis? broad bandwidth data, as this delivers sharp wavelets without sidelobes so that the actual geologic signature of events can be identified. With BroadSeis wavelets each peak or trough corresponds to a genuine geological layer. This clarifies impedance contrasts, creates sharp images of small features and provides clear differentiation between different sedimentary packages.

    Facies Differentiation

    The low frequencies delivered by BroadSeis help highlight channel sand facies with subtle, darker colours in contrast to lighter adjacent mud-rich sediments.  A stunning example of the need for ultra-low frequencies to delineate channel architecture is demonstrated in the frequency decomposition image of a turbidite channel complex in the Kwanza Basin, offshore Angola, shown right. Here various phases of sediment fill, meander growth and incisions can be identified clearly. Without the ultra-low (2.5Hz) frequencies the red channel would not be visible and it would not be possible to track these channels and high-quality reservoir sands.

    Inversion

    Full Waveform Inversion (FWI), acoustic inversion and elastic inversion all benefit from the low frequencies delivered by BroadSeis. Good low frequencies play an important role in the practical use of FWI as they help to avoid cycle skipping and the model converging to the wrong event on the input data. In seismic inversion the low frequencies delivered by BroadSeis, especially when combined with a higher frequency velocity model from FWI, enable quantitative results to be obtained even away from existing wells.
